SSISD Board Meets

From Marci Owens

A regular meeting of the Sulphur Springs ISD school board was held on Monday, January 11, 2016.

No one requested to address the Board.

Board members were recognized in honor of School Board Recognition Month.  Campuses presented gifts of appreciation, cards, and posters to members.  President Prickette expressed thanks, on behalf of the Board, for all the gifts and recognition.

Head Start items were given to board members for informational purposes:  Director’s Report for December, Memo re: postponement of Head Start monitoring review, and Program Instruction memo.

Don Roundtree & Charlie Wilson presented an update on the Civic Center renovation project.

Sandra Gibby announced filing dates for the May 7, 2016 school board election as Wednesday, January 20, 2016 through Friday, February 19, 2016.

Randy Reed presented information re: changes to DAEP placement of high school students.  In certain cases involving fighting, students will be given a 30-day DAEP placement.  This is already an option in the Student Code of Conduct, but will now be implemented for certain incidences.  The hope is to deter fighting at the High School.  Students and parents were made aware of the change following the Christmas break and there have been no fights thus far.

Along with routine matters, the following were approved:

District Annual Financial and Compliance Report for fiscal year ended August 31, 2015.  The District received an “Unqualified Opinion”, which is the best opinion given by auditors.

Application to TEA for Request for Maximum Class Size Exception Waiver for 3rd grade at Sulphur Springs Elementary School.
