From The Chicken Ranch......

January 16, 2014

Well, I guess we've got a name for one of our "ladies" at the Chicken Ranch.....we're going to call #6, Dusty Rose!!!!

You're sending in some great names, so keep 'em coming and we'll continue to go through them and match them up with the right hen, as best we can!

When I purchased my new place, I inherited a Chicken House.....so I thought it would be fun to put some chickens in it and share with you the adventures of the hens, their personalities, and some of their antics.

Folks, the last chickens I messed with were when I was a kid, but I've thus far enjoyed watching them, feeding and watering them, and making sure that they are up at night.

I purchased ten hens from three different places and got a couple of roosters "slipped in" on me, so we may be having chicken stew before too long, as they've been caught crowing about 4:30 in the morning. I like living in the country, but I'd just as soon wake up to an alarm clock!

Another problem that we're having at the Chicken Ranch is egg production....yeah, I know this isn't the season for the most eggs and hopefully they will start laying better as the days get longer and the temperatures warm up. I've gotten two little eggs about the size of a robin egg.....it took cooking both of them to make one egg sandwich! Then, even that hen has stopped laying!

The way I've got it figured, that's about one little bitty egg per 50# of laying mash.....gonna be some expensive eggs at this rate! We haven't given up yet!

Well, keep on sending me names and we'll see what we can come up with in the next few weeks, as hopefully we get some more eggs!
